Default same old ? battery drain...

Can someone enlighten...the CCD is the biggest drain. Is reading and
writing to memory card the next biggest drain or the LCD?
There are also flash cards that claim faster speeds and low battery
consumption.
I use SD (as many do)...in a 5Mp camera.

TIA

The display is the biggest drain. The flash is a big power draw if
you use it.

That's odd that the flash is a heavy drain. I know it has to pump the
1.2V or 1.5V to over the KV range...but I have an old flash unit that
uses one AA that lasts a long time?

It would seem that power to the CCD would use more current than the
LCD. (Mp vs Kpixels)

Depends on how much power you're putting into the flash.

It's the illumination that sucks the power. The same with laptop
computers - lights draw power.

The old flash unit doesn't have to simultaneously power a digital
camera. I have a P&S camera that has a typical, not very powerful
flash. But recharging the flash capacitor uses a *lot* of power.
So much that when the batteries get to the point where trying to
recharge the flash is beyond the camera's ability, and it completely
powers down, the battery still has a lot of energy remaining.
Enough in fact to take more than 400 additional pictures if the
flash isn't used after that point. If you check the spec's for some
of the relatively small external flash units intended to attach to a
camera's hot shoe, you might find that if a relatively small number
of flashes are used (such as 10 or 12), the flash can get so hot
that a protective circuit prevents it from operating again until
several minutes have passed and it has cooled down. I might be
wrong about this. It could be that I read about this shutdown of
the flash unit occurring when the small built-in flash of some DSLRs
are used. But whether they automatically shut down or not, many of
the external flash units are rated for a similar number of full
power flashes, needing similar cool-down periods.
