Default restrictions on photography in public spaces

As some of you may be aware the NYC transit authority is thinking of
banning photography in the subways. There was a recent protest over
this by a group of photographers and there is an article in Friday's
NY Times making fun of the proposal.

I think it might be useful if we collected a list of incidents where
photography has been interfered with by over zealous authorities.
Perhaps posting a copy here and emailing a copy to Mr. Haberman.

Just last summer I was chased away by a guard while photographing
the Hudson river from Battery Park City esplanade. This is supposed
to be a "public space".

It would also be interesting to collect a list of cases, where
photographs were used in committing acts of terrosirm or other crimes.

I doubt if you find any.

I think that photography in the Washington Metro has been banned for a
long time although I don't think it has really been enforced unless you
make a production out of it. I know I have photographed a little there and
have had no problems.

For true security, they also need to ban all postcards, travel books,
etc. A typical travel book provides both photographs and a lot of
information about a building or monument.

We'll know they're serious when we start using the Soviet technique of
publishing intentionally incorrect city maps (other than the token error
or two placed in current maps to detect copyright violations).

Most of the world's subway systems prohibit photography, although it is
rarely enforced. I find it hard to believe that it would not already be
banned in the NYC subway.

On what basis?

And i think it might be usefull if we could leave this crap about where and
where not you are allowed to do what exactly off this list.
There's a place for this boring nonsense, and that is
