I know Troy is a Queenslander, as is Mark Thomas & old Douggie! Hope they are all ok! Yup! IIRC DMac ran his wedding photo operation in Brisbane. We haven't heard from him in well over a year now, and I understand he had some health issues, so there is no telling what might have happened to him. Troy has posted recently, as has Noons, neither had anything to say regarding the floods. "Maroochy" an Aussie who contributes to a.b.p.o. has posted some images there, and she has made a few comments such as this: "The big wet continues, now getting closer to where I live. Took this photo just on high tide this morning, the water is never usually that high, a couple of hours later the water had broken the river banks and still the rain keeps tumbling down (we had 90mm in our rain gauge between 6.00 am and 5.00 pm today). Still, we will never have the flooding problems like those poor people to the north of us...thank goodness." We can only wish them all the best. -- Regards, Savageduck |

It wasn't aimed at you in particular, but I know a lot of people in other countries have no perception of how large this country is. A friend had a visitor from somewhere else who wanted to see Melbourne, Sydney and the Barrier Reef in a week - BY CAR! |

A : friend had a visitor from somewhere else who wanted to see Melbourne, : Sydney and the Barrier Reef in a week - BY CAR! It's a hard perception to maintain. Every American school child who pays attention in geography class knows that the U.S. could comfortably fit within the borders of Australia, with a good bit of Europe left over. But since a lot of Australia is portrayed (to us, at least) as empty space, we tend not to grasp the implications. Few of us will ever actually tour Australia by car (damn good thing too, since sooner or later we'd forget to drive on the left), so the vastness of your country is largely hypothetical. Frankly, I thought Brisbane was much farther around to the north than it is. And only in the last day or two did it dawn on me that the Great Barrier Reef probably makes it impractical to have large cities on your north coast. But all of us have seen serious flooding - or have relatives or friends who have. So even if the flooded area is a relatively tiny part of your country, we empathize with those who are suffering, and hope that that suffering will end soon. Bob |
