Kimberlee,

no surprise. The chromatic aberration is strongest at max zoom
and aperture wide open (1 : 3.1).

When it's bright, the aperture is closed further, which reduces
the aberration, but doesn't eliminate it entirely. Look at sharp
high contrast edges and you will see the color seams.

David,
You will have to register to view the above 32X photo, but it's a fine
example of Canon quality.

I wouldn't go with the Dimage line, unless they've improved the
digital zoom. Canon is the first digital zoom that's actually
usable.

What makes you say that about Canon's digital zoom?

It works. I can use the digital zoom. I couldn't with the Dimage;
it was useless.
With the S1, I can zoom in with optical, then enhance the zoom with
digital, and actually get functional, good quality pics.
~Kimberlee

Thanks for that Kimberlee, I haven't used the Dimage either, so why it
didn't work for you I don't know. With my Nikon 990 & 5700 the digital
zoom works just as expected, although I would only use it at 2:1 digital
zoom. You then get a full resolution image interpolated in the camera
from the centre quarter area.

Cheers,
David

Thanks, Kimberlee. It's very interesting, but the real comparison would
be the 32X zoom image compared to the same image without digital zoom but
at maximum focal length, cropped to the same size. I bet the Image
Stabilisation helped a lot with that shot!

I would also be interested in a comparison of the S1 IS and the Panasonic
FZ10 at maximum zoom under real-world conditions....

Cheers,
David

Yes, they do.
But the problem, in this thread, as I've been adding, is condensation,
as it would interfere with actual picture taking. As temps on the
camera normalize, that problem goes away.

Yes, high hunidity will eventually take its toll; however, making the
camera a camera *for this one trip only* pretty much obviates this
problem; it won't damage the camera in the short run.

Artie

ps - it helps to avoid this one says one thing and another says another
thing. It may indeed be the case that digital cameras will operate at
higher humidity all it takes is the lab test to say so

The question is using a camera on this one trip.
While humidity will take its toll eventually, the camera should make
it through one vacation trip.
