WTF is wrong with Sony? (Firmware updating)

That does seem somewhat clumsy for a firmware update.

So far I have only had to do 2 FW updates on my Nikon DSLRs and 3 FW
updates on my Fujifilm X-E2 and a few on some of my Fujicon XF lenses.
None of those required having the camera involved with the internet.

The appropriate FW update is downloaded from the support site and
loaded onto a formatted CF (Nikon) or SD(Fuji) card which is loaded
into the camera, and then the FW update procedure is followed from the
camera menus. All very quick and simple, with no annoying Sony type
frustration or kludge fixes.
