new marketing paradigm for ICC?
I just got done reading some papers on http://www.color.org
VERY good stuff they admit that color managed device independent workflows have not taken hold in light of device hardware or device media standards like sRGB, SWOP, ProPhotoRGB, etc. it has been 20-30 or more years since color managed workflows have been developed and attempted to be marketed the marketing fails with education that will not likely take place especially in the open systems sense, and the concept of "good enough" color of sRGB etc. has prevailed under the existing marketing paradigm I remember when sRGB first started in ICC I complained on Kodak's internal ICC mailing list that this would lead in a direction other than color managed workflows, and it did obviously at this point there cannot be a marketing paradigm of color or appearance quality in all retrospect, the systems will not be developed as is with 16 bit capture, conversion spaces and storage spaces you cannot even market a quality advantage there,, 8 bit this is a possibility there is a marketing paradigm that might be pursued though, color and appearance PORTABILITY a research study of what use cases could take advantage of portability might lead to the development of portable "open systems" workflows, and the color superiority of color and appearance analysis would come with it, those seeking the portability will have a more open mind to the education of open systems this marketing campaign should be developed by the ICC and 3WC together -- Dale |

new marketing paradigm for ICC?
here are some open system workflows that would benefit from a little
portability of appearance prepress lab wants an imaging lab large format display (print, transparency, translucency) from imaging lab imaging lab wants into printed page with their images from prepress lab sRGB is not device independent SWOP is not ink independent ProPhotoRGB is not device independent this has all gone far astray of the original ICC mission if you don't like to edit in XYZ, CIELAB, or CIELUV, use HSV as your workspace, popular device editing algorithms, like RGB, can be had from HSV HSV is more compatible with named/spot colors, art color palettes, mixing of colors when converted to Luv or Lxy, the creation of art, etc. -- Dale |
