Coolpix 990 No Buttons Work

I'm having a strange problem with my CoolPix 990. When it is first
turned on, the only button that works is the one to take a picture. And
it only works in whatever mode it is in when the camera comes up. It
cannot be changed and it is not possible to turn the camera off. The
"half-way" down function of the shutter button does not work either.

If, however, the shutter button is pushed all the way down, a picture
will be taken. Then all the buttons work normally...except...the
shutter button won't take a picture. The camera can be put in any mode,
auto, manual or play, but pushing the button will not do anything. Oh,
it is also possible to turn the camera off...in which case you can take
one picture when you turn it back on...

Anyone else ever heard of this kind of problem? Is there a way to reset
the internal processor? It seems like something internal is out of sync
with itself.
