500 C/M used buyer checklist
I'm writing a checklist prior to looking at a 500 C/M, lens and back
(Tue). As I'm far from being a 500 C/M expert, I'd like some insider items lo look for. I will be exposing a roll of film, mainly to check for lens problems before committing to the purchase. (See other post regarding 150mm f/4). Are there any such checklists on the web? My list is below, please comment as you see fit... Thanks Alan -- -- r.p.e.35mm user resource: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpe35mmur.htm -- r.p.d.slr-systems: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpdslrsysur.htm -- [SI] gallery & rulz: http://www.pbase.com/shootin -- e-meil: there's no such thing as a FreeLunch. Body Crank Pre-release Shutters Mirror condition Fire lag Cable release Cocked indicator Viewfinder clean Functioning magnifier Back cap Front cap Gear wear Back hooks Back catches Lens Cocked Smooth Quiet Const EV 1 sec exposure (sound) Bulb (sound) PC sync (bring flash) Watch via back of camera during fire (aperture setting) Back Gear wear Catch slots Back release lever and mech Film indicator Dark slide condition Magazine condition |

Body See that rear doors open fully, i.e. lie flat against bottom and mirror. See that they close promptly too. The bottom part of the vertical ridges on the back plate of the camera get knocked a lot by magazines being mounted. See that they are still there/show no more wear than damage to the paint. Watch via back of camera during fire (aperture setting) .... and timing of both shutter and flash synch. |

The only thing I would add to the body checklist- is if there is a lot of scratching around the cocking screw at the front of the body. If you look through the body when the mirror is up and the baffles are open you should see a small screw just under the lens opening. If it is badly scratched or damaged then the previous users have had a lot of problems with jamming lenses. It may not have been a fault of the body, but it indicates misuse and possible poor maintenance. |

I used Hasselblads for 20 years and liked them but when it came time to buy my own kit the additional lens prices scared me away. |

http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/hassybuy.html I regret to announce that I let it go. As I talked about the lens issue with the seller and my fondness for backlit scenes and wanting to test it, he sounded less and less confident. I did buy a Maxxum 7D. So out of the MF game until next fall.
