I don't understand. What does it mean?

It is just a screenshot of the message window of my Usenet client, Hogwasher,
clean of all the polluting, and invading threads. The different colors are
just some of my color coding of my posts, and other individuals.

This might make it easier to grasp.

Google doesn't control Usenet.

Do, please, explain what you mean.

I believe his point is that Google Groups is one of the more common
user access points for USENET today, so if Google pulls the plug on
GG, then USENET traffic will take a big (possibly 'fatal') hit.

IMO, its a reasonable point.

Google Groups is mostly common among people who
don't understand that Usenet is not the Internet. Anyone
who really takes part could find a connection if GG
closed. The Windows 10 group is not picked up by Google.
I know that only because someone asked about it last
week. But it's still a busy group. And the discussions get
reposted at websites online, helping a lot of other people.

What is killing Usenet is simple tech illiteracy and
disinterest. Twenty years ago it was common for
people to have their own website and desktop
computing was a hobby. Online discussion was an
important resource. Gradually the landscape has
changed. Computing has become easier while commercial
interests have moved in. Thus someone like Noons says
he's "moved to Facebook". He's equating an ad-supported
social chat service, hosted by a for-profit corporation,
with public discussion forums. He's a perfect example
of what's happening to Usenet: Most people no longer
understand that the Internet is public space where they
can take part. They've been moved from the town square
to the local mall and they don't know the difference.

For now I have just flagged David’s non-BS posts so his legit posts remain,

The way things have gone, and seem to be going, I have no doubt that I will

I was actually hoping that something interesting would come forward.
For the first time in almost twenty years, I have KF'd those threads,

With Forte Agent, I can just right click to kill. There might be
something just as easy for Mac. I haven't bothered yet because it's so
easy to see the problem threads instantly. Highlight and delete works
for me, for now.

Are you using Agent on Win
10? On my Win10 machine Thunderbird has screwed up the threads, to a
point that the only way I can see what was originally written, is to
reply. Then the original message appears.

Ah-yup! I'm soooo tired of interminable flame war threads here and just
about everywhere else in Usenet where traffic still shows up...

So you understand.

I've taken to completely ignore looooong threads as I know they are
nothing more than useless and time-wasting flaming. It might be
entertainig to the idiots that feed them. Me, bother? Nup!

Most of the silly long threads and arguments created by the regular r.p.d.
subscribers are predictable, and they are easy to ignore. The nature of the
current intrusion is of a very different nature and level of NG killing
toxicity.

One of the reasons why I have moved on to FB and other places where I
can simply block the authors with a click.

I have never been a Facebook fan. However, my step-daughter-from-Hell is an
addict.

Unfortunately with Usenet it's not as easy: most news readers are
hopeless in that area and most flame "experts" can easily avoid
filtering with multiple addresses. Forte used to be good but I gave up
on it a while ago after one update screwed up some of my Windoze dlls.

Currently on my Mac, Hogwasher makes filtering, including simple killing,
deleting individual posts, adding changes due the nymshifters, and in the
case of the issue which provoked my rant, changes to the subject line simple.

Usenet has another 3-4 years of life left, and that's if Google doesn't
decide to clam it up once and for all without warning.

Fortunately Usenet doesn’t live and die by Google. If anything Google
Groups has provided spammers and nuisance posters a gateway into Usenet. Many
of those using Google Groups are actually unaware of the existance of Usenet,
and believe that it is some sort of Google thing. Usenet will die when the
older users such as us die off, and/or when providers other than Google
(which is not a true Usenet provider), can no longer sustain their servers.
Then the Google Groups server farms will be a strange archive of a faded
past.

FB does have advantages, but some of the things they do are sleazy. e.g.
i go on FB from time to time. One day I got a suggestion for a friend.
This was a guy who was one of my golfing partners, for many years. He
moved, and my wife couldn't travel. We lost contact. The sleazy part is
the only way FB could have a reason to suggest him is that they went
through my contact list.
Another warning about FB, if you post an image on FB, they have a
non-exclusive to use that image for all purposes. One of my real
friends, who is a professional photographer, found one of her images
used commercially. The user had paid FB for the image.
