"Dallas" wrote in message newsan.2004.09.30.15.10.00.839000@realphoto... On Wed, 29 Sep 2004 21:24:39 +0000, William Graham had this to say: Well, this is a very familiar dilemma.....Unless you are Bill Gates, or someone of his ilk, you will spend your life trying to decide how to spend the limited amount of money you have.....I know I have had to do that. The lawnmower is too small and cheap an item to worry about. It's cost represents only a small fraction of the cost of that beautiful wide angle Nikkor zoom. As for the holiday.....Well, the question is whether you will get more enjoyment out of the lens than the holiday. They are both, after all, luxuries that you could do without. Once the holiday is over, you are left with nothing but the memories. But the lens will be there for a long time.......On the other hand, if you are not the only one enjoying the holiday, then there are others to consider....... Yeah, it's about the family. I am already in hottish water about the purchase of the D70, so getting this so soon after is pretty selfish. I think I might just pass on the deal. The guy selling it lives quite a long way away too, so knowing my luck he has a bum sample he's trying to offload (which might explain the price). Hummmm.......Maybe he'll take your wife in trade for it.....:^) |

As an example, I carried a Swiss Army knife (Victronox) in my pocket that
cost me $15 in Menlo Park, California, and would have cost me $25 had I purchased it in Germany. The fact that imported goods are cheap in America and you're buying them has alot to do with why the US has a ballooning trade deficit. I enjoyed Europe, and took lots of pictures, and rented a car and drove around a lot, but I bought nearly nothing, and came home without any hard goods, because I could buy nearly everything a lot cheaper back home...... I never said Europe was cheap, I said America must be cheap. You just agreed with my analysis. "William Graham" wrote in message news:YC47d.296640$Fg5.292069@attbi_s53... "Joseph Kewfi" wrote in message ... it doesn't mean anything to me.....As I say, the buying power of my dollars seems to me to be exactly where I would expect it to be, I'm guessing you don't do much foreign travel then? because from the Americans that I've spoken to, their Dollars are buying them far less in Europe compared to the pre-Bush years. I was in Europe during the, "pre-Bush years".....The price of everything I enjoyed Europe, and took lots of pictures, and rented a car and drove around a lot, but I bought nearly nothing, and came home without any hard goods, because I could buy nearly everything a lot cheaper back home...... over there (Germany, Denmark, Austria, and Italy) was way too high.....As an example, I carried a Swiss Army knife (Victronox) in my pocket that cost me $15 in Menlo Park, California, and would have cost me $25 had I purchased it in Germany. |

Is the Swiss make a knife, and ship it all the way to the US, and still sell it at a profit for 3/5 what they charge for it in Switzerland, then there must be something wrong with their economy.....I think that that "something" is taxes. Lots and lots of taxes......What do you think? |

A country requires high taxes to provide a guaranteed basic standard of living for all it's citizens irrespective of their incomes, this is why Europe is expensive. It's also why for example, France has the best healthcare system in the world. "William Graham" wrote in message news:N3k7d.158671$D%.93761@attbi_s51... "Joseph Kewfi" wrote in message ... A country requires high taxes to provide a guaranteed basic standard of living for all it's citizens irrespective of their incomes, this is why Europe is expensive. It's also why for example, France has the best healthcare system in the world. This works well as long as the, "basic standard of living" that all of its citizens gets is not so good that they are so satisfied with it that they don't even bother to try to get a job and work to help out in paying for it. This is the way it's beginning to get in the United States. There are just too many people living on the dole, and there isn't enough incentive for them to go out and get a job. They are happy to sit in front of the TV all day long and collect their welfare checks........I know this, because I have met and talked to these people all of my life.....Also, I have been donating about 1/3 of my income to them all of my life in the form of taxes, so the proof of what I say is right there in my paycheck stubs.........You say that France has the, "best health care system in the world"....Do they have the right to choose their physician and hospital, or do they have to go where the government wants them to go when they get sick? How long a line do they have to stand in waiting to see a doctor when they get sick? Can a rich Frenchman who has worked hard and saved his money all of his life get a better doctor than one who has wasted his money on booze all of his life? - Do you really like socialism? - If so, then why so? |
