I'm really looking forward to the new 30mm f/1.4 Sigma prime, but
nobody's talking about when they'll actually become available. Do you
guys have any info?

Is it for digital only? If so, I wonder if they avoided the retrofocus
design.

Doubt it - digital cameras supposedly have *more* of a need for retrofocal
lenses, because of the angle-of-incidence thing.

Furthermore, you're not going to get a non-retrofocal 30mm lens in any SLR
system because the registration distance on typical SLRs tens to be 45-50mm
- the mirror box is in the way. If you want to see non-retrofocal wides, you
want to be looking at rangefinder lenses, such as the various Biogon copies
that are around.

Somehow the thought of white lenses melting gives me the jitters.

Film lenses seem to do well on my dRebel. Considering the deeper projecting
lens (EF-S) and the smaller mirror box on the Rebel, it should be possible
to create a 30mm lens without retrofocal design. However, Sigma probably
designed the lens with other makes in mind and use retrofocus in it's
design.

That's because they're still SLR lenses, and still have to clear the mirror
box, and so are retrofocal. That SLRs have needed retrofocal wide angle
optices, and so there are many such lenses available for when the industry
started producing DSLRs, is a happy coincidence.

It's not *that* much smaller. Realistically, if you want to use non
retrofocal wide angle lenses on a large sensor, you need to be looking at a
(the) digital rangefinder, and then you're most likely notice that the
angle-of-incidence issue with digital sensors gives you more rapid
edge-falloff than you'd like.

In short, if you want non-retrofocal, wide-angle optics, SLRs are the wrong
technology, and so are digital cameras, at least given current sensor
technology.
