You mean where ILC is used as follows? "The D500 is one of the most expensive APS-C ILCs currently on the market but its sheer capability demonstrates the continued relevance of the format at this point in the market, even if Nikon seemed a little uncertain about that for a few years". It seems perfectly clear that it's being compared with other interchangeable lens cameras of the same format, mirrorless or not. "ILC" as an acronym might have become popular, but they've been around a long time. I thought the common but not particularly definitive acronym for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras was "MILC". (MILC could still be a wooden box with a threaded hole on the front, a 1950s Agfa Ambi Silette, a new digital Leica, a Red or similar digital cine camera etc etc). I don't know why it seems to be a fuss only nowadays. An SLR was quite a specific variation / type of ILC. |

There's no question that any camera with separate lenses is an ILC, but I believe the common meaning has drifted over to mirrorless only. Using it otherwise is just confusing. I suppose that review site uses another term for mirrorless. Possibly "mirrorless". Regardless, I confuse easily, and they need to stop it. |
