Default ...to speak ill of the dead is cowardly.

I believe the direct quote that applies is:

We should keep silent about those in power; to speak well of them almost
implies flattery; to speak ill of them while they are alive is dangerous,
and when they are dead is cowardly.
ATTRIBUTION: Jean De La Bruyère (1645-1696), French writer, moralist. "Of
Great Nobles," aph. 56, Characters (1688).

So it might be said that to speak ill of the famous artist while living is
jealously, and when they are dead is .......

Admittedly I have never heard of the man until today but the fact that
someone cared enough to post his obit on several NG's speaks volumes...

Yes.....Anyone who had the foresight to escape Hitler, and then went on to
make his living with a camera, is OK in my book.........

....poor manners/bad taste?

It has been interesting to be watch how "newsgroup discussion" has evolved
since the early 80's (command-line text back then). I don't know if this is
a reflection of society in general (far beyond my scope to comment...) or a
result of "access to the masses"? I know I am getting off-topic, and I
apologize for this, but whatever happened to compassion (sigh - I'd
settle for civility)?

I guess an update of the old saying must be at work. You know, the one that
goes: ..."anonymity breeds contempt..."

depressingly,
CC

A little more on the anonymity side but a mix of the two.

Then you may want to check out his work, and then you may understand
why some folks (at least two) do not mourn his passing.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Whether you liked his work or not,
the man is dead. Have a little respect. Respect for the family he has left
behind that are grieving, respect for a life lost, respect for yourselves,
for the love of......... I cannot believe how quickly this thread veered
away from the original post. I cannot believe some have the balls to post
will ill against a man they never knew just because they don't agree or
enjoy the art he produced. To those of you who respectfully acknowledged
this mans life and death I applaud you, to the rest of you, well it
embarasses me to belong to the same species as you.

My prayers and thoughts to his family and friends.

(I am replying to group, I realize this means I am crossposting to groups I
don't even subscribe to and I apologize to those if I offend, just wanted to
get my point to all the asses out there)

Not sure where to post this...

LOS ANGELES - Acclaimed photographer Helmut Newton was killed in a car
crash Friday, police said. He was 83.

Newton, a fashion photographer whose work appeared in magazines such
as Playboy, Elle and Vogue, was best known for his stark,
black-and-white nude photos.

Newton lost control of his Cadillac while leaving the Chateau Marmont
hotel in Hollywood and crashed into a wall across the street, said
Officer April Harding, a police spokeswoman.

Before hitting the wall, the car brushed an Associated Press
photographer who was arriving at the hotel on an unrelated assignment.

Newton was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he died a short
time later, Harding said.

Newton, who was Jewish, fled Germany for Singapore in December 1938, a
month after Nazi-led pogroms. He eventually settled in Australia and
became a citizen, then took up

Could I be permitted to register a positive vote re his work. It was after
all mostly hand held 35mm and although I find some of his "pictorial"
statements a bit hard to fathom and yet others that seem to me to be rather
demeaning to women, there is never the less a considerable volume of jolly
fine works that get and even deserve a second glance (stare/gaze), at least
from me.

His marketing skills were remarkable and I for one would happily take a leaf
out of his book. Please note that even if we, ever the sophisticated photo
entrepreneur may not identify with much of his work, there were many in the
highly competitive and sophisticated world of fashion media that saw profit
and good profit at that in his work

cheers otzi
