Fisheye for Nikon
What would you choose if quality and photographic possibilities are
important: Nikon 10.5mm/2.8 DX, Nikon 14mm/2.8, Nikon 16mm/2.8, Sigma 8mm/3.5 og Sigma 15mm/2.8? MAL |

The 10.5mm is the only 180-degree full-frame fisheye for Nikon DX format. The 14mm isn't a fisheye at all, and the 16mm will be heavily cropped. I have the 10.5 and it's great. -- Jeremy | |

Do you want a fisheye or a rectilinear wide angle? The Nikon 10.5 and 16 and the Sigmas are fisheye lenses, the Nikon 14mm is a rectilinear wide angles with minimal distortion. The 10.5mm Nikon and the 8mm Sigma are the only ones of the group that you list that will give a full 180 degree field of view on the cameras you use, and the 10.5 mm will do it only on the diagonal. However if you want maximum "photographic possibilities" in a fisheye take a hard look at the 10-17mm Tokina. -- -- --John to email, dial "usenet" and validate (was jclarke at eye bee em dot net) |

Have You tried the Sigma 8mm? Isn't it a 180-degree lens for Nikon DX format kameras? The 8mm is a circular fisheye for 35mm film cameras and 24x36mm sensor dSLR's. It's usable on a DX format camera, but 'm not sure of the exact coverage you'd get, I've seen some nice landscapes done with this lens on Canon's 20D and 30D. -- Michael Benveniste -- Spam and UCE professionally evaluated for $419. But, I didn't buy a decent camera so I could put Sigma lenses on it. Personally I bought a decent camera so I could take pictures, not so I could put specific brands of lens on it. If the Sigma will get the shot I want and the competition won't then Sigma it is. Any other viewpoint suggests that you are more interested in _your_ image than in the image you record. -- -- --John to email, dial "usenet" and validate (was jclarke at eye bee em dot net) |

I would (and did) choose the Nikon 10.5, which is the only one of the lenses you've listed that will give you the full 180 degrees corner to corner on your Nikon dSLR sensor. And it's not terribly expensive either. The 10.5mm Fisheye-Nikkor has an additional advantage in that it converts very nicely to rectilinear with Nikon Capture 4 (and NX too, I understand), making it effectively a dual-purpose lens. I love the 10.5. Neil |
