I assume that first curtain can be used for ... 1. those birdies that react on the shutter sound. they will be somewhere else when the 2nd curtain synced flash flashes. 2. it feels better when the flash gets of when you push the button. 3. Using rear-curtain sync, you are effectively introducing the equivalent of "shutter lag" nearly equal to the exposure time. -- Jeremy

Ducks for cover............. I assume that first curtain can be used for ... 1. those birdies that react on the shutter sound. they will be somewhere else when the 2nd curtain synced flash flashes. 2. it feels better when the flash gets of when you push the button. Given that shutter speed for flash sync is typically 1/125 can you notice a delay of 80ms? Obviously if you need a logger exposure for the background, but there are then good reasons not to risk startling your subject with the flash when the shutter is will remain open long enough to record their reaction. If speed trails are an issue then any reaction to the flash will be a small modification of existing movement. -- Ian G8ILZ |

It's a reason to use front-curtain sync, not some kind of silly argument that you should always use it. -- Jeremy

1/250 could have been a crispy 1/350 or more at 2.8, and yes...you'd still have some obvious and nice motion effects... Can you say "flash sync?" Should have bought a D70 then. ;-) (ducks and runs for cover) NB. I like your images. -- Jose Marques |
