The USA's history of keeping higher quality products and selling all
factory-rejects overseas is well known.

That would explain why the US economy is in such a mess.

Chrysler and GM for example....

BTW I understand the real unemployment figure for the US is 15-20%
couple that with their third world style social support and medical
systems and you have a recipe for disaster.

Sigh. The U.S. spends more on various forms of welfare than any other
country on the planet. They always have.

Rightard bull****.

No... In terms of the head line amount he might be right The US is a
large country.

"Might be right" is the same as "probably wrong".

However in terms of % of GDP or per head of population he is so very
wrong. If he were right then someone is being totally incompetent with
the money or embezzling 90% of it,.

don't understand the basics. The "workforce", used in computing US
unemployment statistics, is age 16 and over (no upper age cut-off).

Does the US not have compulsory retirement at a certain age?

Technically, no. Practically, yes. The older you get the harder it
is to get and/or keep a job in most professions.

Not correct. With 20% of the legal US population unemployed you are not
"doing well"

Instead of quoting bar buddies as authorities, it is easy enough to find
the
real authority, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. www.bls.gov.

They cite a 9.4% unemployment rate for July 2009. Add in the discouraged
workers and the part time workers who wish to be full time, the rate is
16.4%
total http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t12.htm.

Now that's percentage of the workforce (people of working age who wish to
be
employed). The percentage of the legal US population would be about half
that.
The US population is roughly 300,000,000. The US workforce is 140,000,000
(see
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t06.htm. There really aren't good
figures on the number of illegals, but it is probably around 12,000,000.

Illegals don't count in this.

The commends said to me was a lot of legal Americans were now destitute,
living in cars, tents or otherwise homeless and dropping off the radar.

You have said the official figure is 9.4 but you have said the other
figure is 16.4 now if you look at all those who have lost their homes
and are living in cars, tents, shanty towns etc is another 4% a
reasonable estimate?

BTW I initially said 15-20% and 16.4 is at the lower end of my range.

The worry of the people I was talking to (a well connected major US
charity) was that due to the US medical/social and benefits system (or
lack of) many Americans were now destitute and falling through the
system.

And how many of these "destitute" people are in that condition due to their
own actions (or lack of)? There is a level of personal responsibility that
must be considered. You seem to imply, correct me if I'm wrong, that the
"system" is to blame for the destitute. Our medical system is fine and our
"benefit" system pays out far more than necessary. It's not the
government's responsibility to provide health care and benefits.
Unfortunately, our current president doesn't think so he is intent on
bankrupting us even more than he has already - if that's even possible. As
a UK citizen, you should know that your government provided healthcare
system is unsustainable. That is why measures are being taken there to move
people towards private healthcare. One way to do it is by further rationing
of healthcare. If you can't get it in the government plan so you are left
with no choice but a private one. That is the direction it is moving in the
UK. We have 15 million uninisured Americans and for this our president
wants to change the entire system for everyone else. It's really not about
getting healthcare for the uninsured, it's about government control - he is
a socialist, pure and simple. He believes in government control in our
lives and redistibuting the wealth from the "haves" who've earned it to the
"have nots" that haven't earned it.

I found the Chinese takeaway food in the UK far superior to that made and
sold in China!!!
Authentic Chinese food is much greasier than the 'Westernised' versions
you get outside China.
Which "authentic" Chinese food is that?
All of the regional styles I've tried (which admittedly isn't all of them).
"Hamburgers are fattening
Hamburgers are American food
American food is fattening
Corn is American food
Corn is fattening"

Spot the flaw

It's a big country with many
varied cuisines.
Very true.
Thus, your claim is crap.
You think? Name a Chinese regional cuisine that isn't fatty.

Rice

Lame. Rice isn't a cuisine.

It's an "Authentic Chinese food". Are you now moving the goalposts?

You're just being stupid.

You're just being prejudiced. You seem to think that just because
you've visited China you're an expert on all the various Chinese
cuisines.
