Default New Fuji Finepix S5000 - problems with!!!

I never had either of these problems with the s602z pro or 6900 forerunners
and they both had heavy usage...what a shame.

Me thinks yours might be a "friday afternoon special" (ie duffer). Send it
back to fuji it must still be under warranty.

In February I purchased a Fuji Finepix 5000 at Duty Free in Gatwick
Airport. However now things are starting to go wrong with it.

The problems a

1/ The 'power off' setting is set for two minutes, but it actually
'powers' off after only 5 seconds. This is irritating in that I have
to keep switching it off and then back on again to keep it powered up.

2/ The flash no longer works - in fact it no longer charges up - even
with brand new digital purpose batteries. I've only ever managed to
take one picture using flash - in March. Basically the flash does not
work - period.

3/ When the battery is running low the display does not warn me with
the usual battery icon - the camera simply stops recording pictures -
period.

4/ Even when switched off the camera seems to be using power since the
batteries quickly run down and require replacing.

Whilst the digital images are superb - even better than film - a
digital camera has much more to go wrong with it, and is FAR more
expensive to run. Be warned!!

Sounds like batteries to me.

Sounds like batteries to me. When you say "digital purpose" batteries - here
in australia there is a brand of batteries called "digital purpose" that are
usually sold in $2 shops. They are crap low-end medium-duty dry cells
(equivalent to everready blue if you have those in UK) - not even alkaline.
If you are using non-rechargeable batteries you should be using good quality
alkaline at the very least, preferably titanium or lithium (energizer e2
titanium or energizer e2 lithium, kodak photolife lithium).

Or that you are using low-life batteries.

Sounds like you are using non-rechargeable batteries, and cheap crap ones at
that. If you insist on using non-rechargeable batteries, buy the expensive
ones - energizer e2, kodak photolife etc. They will last _much_ longer than
normal alkaline batteries, and will actually work out cheaper in the long
run. The prices here in Australia are about $15 for a set of 4 lithium
batteries and about $5 for a set of normal alkalines - but the lithiums last
MUCH more than 3 times the alkalines.
Ideally, buy yourself a NiMH battery charger and a set of 2100mAH or 2300mAH
batteries. They last well per charge, and being rechargeable you don't have
to keep buying new batteries. 1 or 2 sets of these should easily last a
couple of years. If you are buying a battery charger don't be tempted by the
much cheaper "rechargeable alkaline" batteries and charger. These things are
complete poop and totally unsuitable for a digital camera.

Folks - many thanks for your replies. The batteries were fresh, and
new, especially for digital cameras such as the S5000. They were not
cheap!! Its the fact that the flash no longer works - well no longer
charges up - that it of real concern.

I'll have to see what Fuji say about repairing it. Does anyone know of
any discussion forums for the S5000 please?

http://www.s5000.net/ has info about the camera. The discussions section is
a brilliant resource for anything related to this camera, and much related
to photography in general. I visit it daily, and post at least weekly.
