Does flying over water ever unnerve you, given the value of the drone?

When I first started I was aware of the risks of flying over water, and a bit
wary as a result. Over time I have become much more confident with both the
tech & capability of the drone, and my slowly improving flying skills.

My scariest flight was #4 from my back deck when I got a bit overconfident,
and lost the signal between the drone and my controller. The auto return to
home kicked in, and I was saved from a crash into the signal blocking hill by
the obstacle avoidance sensors in the drone.

The video linked below demonstrates that scary, near miss incident.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Air-2-Work/i-Jv5psp9/0/4b99207a/1920/NearMiss-1920.mp4

I guess communications is pretty reliable with them now, plus they have
built-in "homing beacons" and the like.

My drone, a DJI Mavic Air 2 has a pretty good proprietary “Occusync 2.0”
controller communications system rather than WiFi. The GPS is very good, so
the “Home point” at take off is established with GPS, and a bottom scanner.
For the linked flight I had 16 satellites locked.

Very interesting - thanks for the post. Impressive to see the software kick in
so effectively. Bit scary at the c.2 minute mark as it appears to come very
close to a tree, but ended well!

Very nice. I wish I could go there over Xmas. Instead it looks
like we'll be stuck here in the lockdown (Austria just closed
their border, so to go to Italy you'd have to drive over
Switzerland).

I believe that France just closed its border for those wanting to visit
alpine ski resorts.

This is a little further along in that flight following a sail boat as he
sails among the moored yachts.

So was that guy unskilled, or so skilled that he likes to get very close to
things?

Nice videos again btw, and you’re clearly getting better at smoother
movements.

Nice.

FYI and anyone else when I download it as a MPEG-4 it is still 640X360
Elemental H264 , 30 FPS , 26.9MB 1.40 Mbits/s
With firefox and same with safari .

Still impressive though. Now wondering about sound there was none . Was
that an editing or filming choice as I wonder if the niose cancelling was
excellent or you chose not to have sound.

It was simpler to post without sound, and being primarily a stills
photographer, I have yet to expand my video editing, and production skills
to even bother with audio, even though I am aware that the addition of audio
would enhance the viewer’s experience.

Simplier in what way, but I;d be curious to know what the sound quality is
like I know drones are pretty noisey and wondered if yuo could pick up any
ambient sounds.

To start with there is no audio pickup/mike in this drone camera. However, I
can record audio from the controller so any ambient sounds/noise would be from
that position. What I can do is record a takeoff and landing with my GoPro to
give you some idea of the actual noise level. Personally I find the
noise/rotor sound audible up to 30-40 ft overhead, to difficult to detect once
the drone is 100-200 ft away from the takeoff point.

....but then my almost 72 year old ears might be failing me even though I don't
quite believe that.

I know most drone footage when shot for TV usually has a soundtrack over it,
I know that might be hassle to do but wondered what the sound quality of an
unedit clip would be.
As in what does the drone noise sound like, could I hear car engines or
boats.

As to the size, all I can say is I am sharing a full resolution link to a
3840x2160, 60 fps, 3.76 GB MP4, SmugMug file, intended for simple viewing in
a browser, rather than a download.

well it opens up in firefox as a 640X360 image in a full broweser window, but
chrome opens it us to full broswer window with reduced quality.
You may well be posting it at full quality but maybe viewers aren;t seeing
it in it's full uncompressed glory.

Then that is an issue local to the viewer which I am not experiencing, and
which I have no control over.

This clip of a takeoff recorded in the controller should give you some idea of
the rotor noise.

Each time I have tried this it gets to the point where the yacht is
just starting to enter the fleet and moored yachts when up pops a
message "Video playback aborted due to a netwoor error". The image
then becomes dark and colorless but continues playing to 7'45".

those pesky netwoor errors are the worst.
