the mac plus came out in 1986 and the lc in 1990, both predating when
ethernet was on logic boards.
macs started to include ethernet on the logic board in 1991, no
additional card needed.
Not all of them only the higher end ones.

I remember installing them in the PDS slots , you had to remove plastic part at the back.
for low end models, sure. for others, it was on the logic board, no
additional cards needed.
pcs didn't start including ethernet on the logic board until *much*
later and even longer until it was common. they were late on wifi too,
for that matter.
