Take a look at the canon rebel XT. It is very small, about the size of larger
P&S cameras. The XT is used by some amateur astronomers it is so good.
The Nikon D50 has good low light performance too. The D50 is used
by some amateur astronomers too.
The new canon 400D (XTi) might be pretty good and has a new
anti dust mechanism.
