How on earth does Ken Rockwell's 'test review' of the D200 get to first
place on google? I thought google worked by counting the number of
cross-referenced links to the web page to calculate it's page rank

rating,
and not the number of opinionated sentences per page.

There is more to it: Why in earth does he appear with headers like
"Nikon D90 test review" of "D80 test review" in google, only to say
"This is a rumor, such camera does not exist, do not believe otherwise."

Of course what he wants to achieve are... more clicks. Possibly he
is being paid by the page hit numbers.

Sort of: he's being paid by his advertising, so the more people he can
direct to his site, the better chance he'll have of people clicking on the
ads themselves, and that's where the money comes from.
