Start by being selfish and don1t share the MacBook with the family. Get
the family their own MacBook.

Lob us a couple of grand and you're on mate!

macbooks start at *under* $1000.

Not Pros with decent GPUs

what exactly is your family doing that requires a decent gpu?

photoshop and lightroom, sure, but that's *your* macbook.
are *they* also doing photo editing?

Is there any reasoning to that? Not being funny (or ungrateful to free
advice) - I just like to understand the "why"

it's a ****load of effort that is not only not needed, but begging to
cause all sorts of problems.

So mostly down to the number of devices then?

it's down to manually doing work that a computer can do for you.
do you really want to keep track of which photo is on which drive??

and then there's the situation where you create collections that
include photos from multiple drives.

smart previews is designed for exactly the situation you describe, no
additional hardware needed and no additional work required to use it.
