If you own a Canon P&S camera (or any camera for that matter), or are
considering buying a new camera and don't know about CHDK, you owe it to
yourself to see what CHDK can do. No other cameras in existence, DSLRs included,
are capable of what a CHDK-compatible camera can do today.

Any progress on the a540 ?

Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be anything added to that section of the
Wikia yet. http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/A540

The most recent developments will be eventually listed in the links on this page
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/For_Developers Unless you are fluent in Russian and
can follow the discussion threads on the Russian forums. Links available on the
main http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK page. As well as the "News" banner section
there that might report someone finding something new in another place on the
net.

You can sometimes get a jump on things by just checking the available downloads
from EWAVR's download page for his experimental builds. (Link available in this
section http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Downloads ) He sometimes provides a new port
to other makes and models before others do. Being Ukrainian and involved with
the Russian teams and forums he has a head-start on a few things at times. Not
to mention finding ways around limitations that everyone once thought was
impossible. Like a simple USB remote-cable release, all the different video
compression options.

If you have an A540 and the ambition, I would strongly urge you to find a way to
get the firmware out of your camera and to the main developers. Once they have
that then the 2 little files needed for your camera are usually available within
a day or two.

UPDATE: I just went and checked another discussion. Apparently someone with the
A540 firmware trying to find a way to get it to the main gurus earlier today.
Your wait may not be as long as you thought.

Anyway, new CHDK ports and features seems to come in huge jumps. Soon as a new
feature is found or invented then everyone is porting it to all the cameras
already supported. All the new buzz on the many dozens of discussion forums
interests people who have never heard it before. One of those new bystanders
invariably has a different camera model as well as the intellect and drive to
figure out how to provide a new firmware for all the developers. That new one
(or ones) gets added to all the others' builds. Then everyone settles down to
explore and use all the new features again. It seems to be following this
pattern since day one.
