If you really want to take a lot of Indoors Pictures, especially of moving
people, then there is no sensible alternative to using Flash.

The washed out faces against inky black background, is a direct result of a
built in low power flash.

A proper on-camera, (or even better a remote), and powerful Flash used
sensibly will produce very acceptable results.

no compact camera can do the same?

The flash is too close to the lens. That produces excessive red-eye
and a flat (no shadows) look. Diffuse shadows add depth
without being harsh. It is hard to do without reflectors
and diffuser screens, so people often bounce the flash off walls,
or ceilings, but that isn't perfect either.
