I was about 6 feet away, and it was shot with the X-E2 + XF55-200mm.
Scrub Jays aren't too squirrelly around people.

The Florida Scrub Jay is a threatened species. Developers are
clearing out the areas that are the bird's natural habitat. There are
a few parks where there is scrub, and they are a favorite place for
photographers. It's bird that anyone can get close to.

The Florida Scrub Jay will even land on your finger for a selfie.


We have a reserve here, Elizabeth Morton, a National game reserve, and
IIRC the only one in the country that encourages visitors to feed the
birds. As a result, the birds have become so acclimated to people that
during the really cold weather some species, mainly the chickadees, will
literally eat out of your hand. But the woodpeckers, cardinals, jays and
turkeys will pose nicely, if you feed them.
