My advice is - use a tripod.

Undoubtedly the best advice, but a monopod is still better than
nothing if you can't carry too much gear around with you.

On the advice of someone in this group (thank you!) I splurged on this
one from Adorama:

TPP Adorama Podmatic 5 Section Monopod w/Case (no head) Our Version Of
The Linhof Monomatic #003458 89.95

----------------------------------------------------------------- ------
----
Subtotal: 89.95
Tax: 0.00
Insurance + Shipping: 8.45
UPS 3 Day
Grand Total: 98.40

No complaints yet. It collapses to about a foot long (w/o a ball head,
which I added), is very light-weight, has a clever instant
extend/length-set feature, and comes with a case that accommodates the
'pod with the head.
