Oh Tom, that is so wrong. Or perhaps just an overstated personal
preference. Lighting the background evenly is not that hard with
electronic flash ('strobe'), and it is quite common. _Not_ lighting it
evenly but still with certain precision is also perfectly common. For
example, if you do B&W against a background of graduated light it gives a
very interesting 'roundness' to foreground subject of low contrast,
modeled light.
