It's a myth. First, it's "level" not "straight". And even the
admonition to level the horizon is mostly a myth.
A waterline meeting the horison -- O.K., we expect that should
be level. Terrain isn't usually level. The image of water meeting
a bank won't generally be level in a photograph.
Level the *camera*, on the roll axis. That may or may not level
the horizon.
