Lens choice recommendations

My experience:
Interesting that you have no interest in moderate to wide angle.
Realizing that the camera has a 1.6x crop factor you are considering what
amount to extreme telephoto lenses. Your...

D200 or D300{ Which better for

If you can wait there is no reason not to get the D300. I certainly would.
NX will recognize the inevitable new raw format immediately and Adobe will
within a month.
The live preview thing is not as...

Release date for Nikon D300??

The D80 was available in volume on the day of its "release."
However Nikon had months to stock up on the sensors from Sony because they
were already in use on the D200.
As the D300 is a new part it...

colorblindness

If you cannot trust your own color judgement then there are many tools in
Photoshop and many plug-ins that will generate reasonably accurate color,
beginning with the curves dropper tools.
But you...

EPSON 1400 COLOR

You have color management but you know not how to use color management.
The serious answer: when you move from a low end printer to a high end
printer one reason for the mismatches is that the hi...

Canon 40D Shipped

Why on earth would someone who apparently has a selection of Nikons than one
"loves" then order a high end Canon?
Cameraholism is a serious illness.
How many children could eat for how long on what...

Upon cursory examination on dpreview, etc.....

Is there some way to permanently block "RichA" from posting?
Or at least prevent these posts from coming up in my newsgroup reader?

Sharpening Really required?

A complex subject.
Jpegs made by a camera are already sharpened and most users would not feel
they need additional sharpening, which can introduce many artifacts.
RAW digital images and scanned film...

Thoughts on 5D upgrade?

There will always be something better just over the horizon.
If you are convinced you have to have what the 5d has to offer at its
considerable price premium, and I personally have no idea what that...

EPSON Stylus Photo R1800 InkJet Photo Color Printer? _ Opionions?

For photo printing only. Great at what it does.
Have to be scrupulous about checking nozzles for clogs.
Have to use Epson ink.
Better for color than B&W though good for latter.
New Epson dye based...

Gimp vs Photoshop

While the price of Photoshop is insane it is a product that Adobe has
invested considerable time and money in developing,
Elements is available at very discounted prices and does far more than Gimp...

How to calibrate LCD monitor (LG L194WT) ??

Personally I find that most first pesron shooters, Doom 3 et al, are
unplayable in daylight no matter what kind of monitor is used, although you
can crank up the brightness and gamma within the...

Adobe DNG, Ricoh GR Digital and Mac OS X

Two things:
I never understood why someone would buy one of those Ricohs. To each his
own.
It isn't OSX per se.
Why would an Apple software product, Aperture, support the proprietary
format (DNG)...

Upgrade to CS3? Opinions Wanted

I second Mr. Brown.
The power of your software far exceeds the capability of your cameras.
If you understand how to use Lightroom/PS and general photography then put
the money that a CS3 upgrade...

I hate to ask but... D40 or K100D?

I would strongly recommend someone contemplating the purchase of a dSLR who
is not familiar with SLR photography seriously consider one of the IS long
zoom EVF cameras.
Ditto if you only plan to...

To RAW or not to RAW

I am a great believer in EVF cameras of the Z50 genre. I think most amateur
users would be happier with one of them than a dSLR if they only shoot
jpegs. But these cameras have significant...

If the lens is working, and turned on, at long focal lengths you should see
less shake through the viewfinder than when the VR is turned off when you
hold the shutter partly depressed. I do,...

Image stabilization - which works better, sensor or lens shift?

Wagers on whether the next generation of Nikon dSLRs will have image
stabilization built into the camera (where it belongs) and this newsgroup
will be filled with people complaining about how much...

Question About Nikon Lenses at B&H

You will be happier with the 18-135.
The 28-105 is a very good lens but on a dSLR will not get you any kind of
wide angle coverage (its wide end is like a 45mm lens on 35mm film camera on
a...

Pentax K10D DSLR jpg vs RAW

The K10d has the same sensor as the Nikon D200/80/40x/Sony Alpha.
I am not sure what your standard of quality is if you see images from an old
Nikon 995 as equivalent to a jpeg from the D10. The 995...

Nikon's NXCapture Software - Opinions?

I very much like NX as a raw converter. I generally open images in NX and
then finish in Photoshop.
I like the default settings that NX opens raw images into; NX also allows
adjustment of the...

A note on the Nikkor 55-200 4.0

You must have gotten the one that worked.
I had a very different experience.
I returned two of these losers: slow focus, constant hunting for the focus
point.
Even when focused the images were...

iPod and RAW files

My experience with the Ipod connector is disappointing.
It tends to fail during downloading raw images from a dSLR and is very slow.
Transfer rates are far slower than if you tried to transfer files...
