Strange behaviour - Sony p200

Hi - I've got a Sony P200 - nice wee camera, about 2 years old.
Tonight I turned it on and the lens popped out the way it always does,
then went through an attempt to retract again, then stopped with the
lens still in the 'out' position. Then there was a message on screen
saying 'turn the power off and on again'. I have tried this and I can
hear the wee motor whirring, the lens wiggles in and out without fully
retracting and then everything stops with the lens still out. I can't
take any pictures, but I can review those already in the camera. The
camera hasn't been dropped or banged, so its a bit of a mystery.

Has this happened to anyone else with this model and, more important,
what did you do to fix it?

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the dreaded dust or grit. These cameras, where the lens
extends when switched on tend to have (and need) very fine tolerances to
keep the lens fully inline with the sensor.

Try asking Sony about it first - they may actually do it for you (and
possibly for a very small charge) and it may be cheaper than trying to
find a place who will repair/check it for you.
