I don't quite understand what the big deal is about LiveView, as this
technology has been available in compacts for at least 6-7 years now,
right?

Yes, but it is new to DSLRs, and is very convenient for perfect focus.
Manually focusing with the sensor, zoomed in, can never be off because of a
discrepancy in sensor and focus screen differences.

I've only done it in NTSC, but HDMI output probably works wonders in a
studio-like situation (I haven't purchased the necessary cable for my 50D).

With the exception of those DSLR live view implementations which use a
separate live view sensor, such as the Sony A300 & A350.
