I can't believe I did this. Did you ever do anything this dumb?
 

I was shooting a friend and his wife today and kept thinking that I was
forgeting something. I checked the meter, the focus and all that, but
couldn't think of anything. Then when I got home I started thinking about
how I had trouble positioning the two on them for some shots. It was then
that I realized I did the whole shoot in the horizontal position, and never
did any verticals. I still can't believe I did something so dumb after
taking pictures for over 40 years. Did you ever do something so dumb? Tell
me so that I don't do something like that again. Ric in Wisconsin.

I once shot a whole day at a 45 degree angle. Didn't notice till I tried to
mount the pics in my album. Boy I felt so dumb! Maybe I should stop drinking...
It's like the steering wheel stuck in my crotch... I don't know what it's doing
there, but it's driving me nuts.

Do you mean you were lying down for the entire shoot?
For a moment I thought you were going to say you had forgotten to
dispose of the bodies.

What is really dumb is to leave the WB set for Flash when you go out
for some daylight scenery shots the morning after using your flash.
(Only RAW will save you here.)

I left the camera on small JPG from doing time lapse before, then spent
hours doing long exposures in the cold only to get a set of postage stamps.

What's the problem?
Shooting this way allows you to crop to 4/3rds the "true"
portrait aspect ratio or square. I bought a screen for my D700
and had the lines for doing this engraved into it. It is only
when you intend to make extreme enlargements that any
resolution issues might arise.

If you aren't going to print larger than perhaps 16x20, the 35mm negative
can be cropped for vertical and it will still hold up. I've frequently
printed 20x24 prints from 35mm and they look fine.

You didn't actually request an explanation of your behavior, but I'll provide
it anyway: You subconciously snapped back to the 1950s and imagined that you
were shooting in stereo, where verticals are, of course, forbidden. To avoid
going insane, you may have to buy a stereo camera (possibly available on
E-bay) and actually take pictures with it from time to time. Alas, you won't
be able to use Kodachrome, but other types of film may be found if you look
hard enough.

My mother's estranged oldest brother came home after 40-plus years to
a reunion with 7 of his 10 siblings. It was the first time I'd ever
met him, and I was in my early 40s at the time. I shot a whole roll
of film of him with his siblings, and had an aunt shoot a couple of
shots of me with him. There went 24 shots, and so I rewound and
opened up the camera - no film. (I thought it rewound awfully
easily.)

Luckily one of my aunts took a lot of pictures as well, and so I got
copies of hers.

Dude, that doesn't even compare to some of the dumbest things I've
done.
Here's 4 of my favs:

1. First day with my new EOS-1V film camera. Went to Atlanta and
shot three rolls of Tiger Woods and other pros at the Tour
Championship. Made Tiger stop his swing in the middle of his
downswing when the Fabulous EOS-1V's motor drive sounded like a
machine gun. But it was just a Pro-Am (practice round) so who gives a
****, right?
Noticed something blinking "3" on the top of the camera and made a
mental note to read the manual when I got home. Rushed back home (two
hour drive) just in time to drop the film off an hour before they
closed. Went back in one hour, eagerly awaiting all my great film
shots of Tiger Woods. The guy said, "We have a problem. All your
shots are black."
Turns out I had accidentally bumped the EC setting to -3 stops
underexposed.
Oops.

3 stops? Strikes me that Photoshop should be able to salvage those.......

Dumbest couple of things I've done...
Was on a rare trip to the Sunshine Coast (South-East
Queensland). The sun was setting behind the Glasshouse
Mountains and was absolutely gorgeous. Quickly drove to the
carpark of a lookout, and ran up the hill (about 200m
altitude rise in about 600m) and felt like I was going to
have a heart attack. Got to the top just as the light was
perfect. Puffing and panting I took the one remaining shot
on the roll of Fuji 400 that was in the camera, so I could
load a roll of Velvia. Then I realised - the Velvia was
still in the car - 600m away and 200m below me. With no film
I watched as the perfect light melted away, and did the
best I could with my mobile phone camera.

Grabbed one of my old classic cameras that I hadn't used in
a few months and opened the back to load a roll of film - it
already was half-way through a roll.

A few months ago I did an hour long hike up a nearby
mountain in time to catch the dawn. Reached the top, sat the
GX10 on the tripod, switched it on, NOTHING. The battery was
sitting at home on its charger. Fortunately it wasn't a
complete loss, I still had a dozen exposures on the film
camera I brought with me, and I used my S2IS that I intended
to use for video to take a few shots.
