Has anybody tried using centre filters on regular
35mm SLR lens to achieve a more even light fall-off?

No, but if you shoot color negative (or b&w) and scan
your film I have a tip on removing the vignetting using
Photoshop in the tips section of my web site.

No, because the amount of light fall-off varies with different (mostly
the wider) apertures.

The light fall off variance with aperture is true for any lens.
