I saw a half-dozen Kodak carousel slide trays
at the Goodwill the other day. Ten bucks for
the lot. And I didn't buy them. Am I
backsliding?

I don't think he did BTW, but here's my 2 cents. I have a pile of trays and
three Carousel projectors, all Goodwill, I have suspended shooting slides
for a bit since my local lab is terrible, but will get back into it this
spring after I locate another lab or rebuild the E-6 processor someone gave
me. My gut feeling is that E-6 will be with us for a while yet, since it is
much easier to scan than negative for most of us. I don't project my
"keepers" but make dupes, my vacation and personal works gets projected,
too.

One thing to look for is a stack loader. Then you can run through slides
quickly when you get them back without having to load trays first. Cull the
slides and store the good ones, trash the culls immediately. If in Plastic
reusable mounts I save the mounts for my dupes, which I have returned
unmounted.

I think that depends on how many slides you shoot and
whether you store them in the trays. Most of my trays were
bought at a thrift shop for a dollar or two each. I have a
bunch of unused ones but they don't wear out and will
eventually be used. OTOH, something you don't need or can't
use is no bargain no matter how cheap it is.

1980. I even bought a stack loader back then.
But somehow my attention wandered from color
work of any sort, and even the carousel trays
I have seem too bulky. It felt very weird to
walk away from such a good deal.

I love the look of a projected image. Black
and white slides are terrific, too. But if I
think about time and effort and where I'd put
them, it's into black and white prints.

It's clear that Kodachrome won't be around forever, and when it goes so
will my slide shooting, most likely. I have many, many thousands of
slide shot over the last 35 years or so; all are in Carousel trays, and
I keep two spare projectors. I've recently stopped picking up bargain
trays like that, as I have enough to supply my probable future use.

BTW - despite proper and careful storage, only the Kodachrome slides
from a few decades ago still look good - most of the E-4 and E-6 stuff
has shifted. And transfer slides done from 5247 cine stock are almost
completely blank!

If you can also get a good programmable dissolve
unit at a good price, I'd say so.

No power point presentation can match a good
old fashioned slide show...
