Maybe we need to be more assertive. "I have a ticket, and it says nothing
about cameras. If you want to make an issue of it, you can call the police;
I'll call the press, and my lawyer, and the City Licensing Bureau, and my
State Representative, etc., etc." My guess is that they'll cave more often
than not.

FWIW, my local conference/sports centers have policies posted on-line.

you'd guess wrong. they'll tell you to come back without the camera. if
you don't leave, they'll have you removed.

Not under UK or US law they won't. The owner of the venue has absolute
rights over what he permits the public to do on *HIS* private property.
Somewhere in the ticket contract it will say what you can do.

In the UK you have to watch out for brass studs in the pavement which
mark the delineation between public space and private land (and the
little brass plaques that go with them). Refuge Assurance once got it
spectacularly wrong and had to shred an entire advertising campaign.

Malls and department stores tend to be very tetchy about photography
inside. Not that they can prevent it with modern smart phones etc.

Simplest thing to do is carry a much smaller camera phone if you want to
take shots in a "no photography" zone (and switch off the flash).

Watch the Olympic opening sequence to see how many morons think a puny
on camera flash can illuminate an olympic stadium at night time.

A joke that was already old when I was young (I heard it around 1966 or so):

Q: What do I set my Instamatic on to take a flash picture of the moon?
A: Infinity.

When working at a local camera store in the 70's we had a lady come in who
had just received a tele lens for Christmas and was befuddled about the "ƒ"
mark on the lens barrel. My buddy tried to explain to the elderly patron
that it was the symbol for infinity. The lady looked befuddled and asked if
that was in feet or meters. Hitch tried to explain that it didn't really
matter because it was simply 'infinite', to which she asked the similar
question, "Is that farther than the moon?".

Just for the record, George, "elderly" is not a synonym for "stupid" or
"ignorant". For every person of my age that you encounter who doesn't know
what the symbol for infinity means, I'm sure I could find you someone fifty
years younger who doesn't know either.

And as they tell you in the first chapter of most calculus books, there are
such things as infinite numbers, but "infinity" is not a number. ;^)

I agree, and I suspect that many of the people using flash in the stadium
understand that it isn't doing anything but contributing to the sepctacle.

Hey don't look at me - I'm gonna finally get my Medicare this year. It seems
like it has been an infinite time, indeed...

My ticket to last night's hockey game at the Garden did say it, but I
waltzed in with a camera bag anyway. Nobody even batted an eyelash.
