expensive Mac instead of a much cheaper PC.

you have *no* idea how much he paid for his macbook. chances are it
cost *less* than a similar pc laptop.

My last expensive Mac sold, used, after 6 years, for more than people
pay for middle of the road Windows PC's and that cash offset the cost of
this Mac which will eventually sell for more than ... well, you get the
picture.

Never mind the quality of the display on Macs that doesn't come with the
"bundles" that are so appealing with PC offers.

Never mind time saved by not dealing with Windows issues, one after the
next.

Never mind that Apple major OS updates are free.

Never mind that there is a single flavour of Mac OS for all kinds of
use. (None of the low value idiocy of Windows editions (home, student,
professional).

All these issue do not exist with this PC I'm using right now. And in
any case, after 6 years a PC is totally depreciated and you buy a new
one. 500 Euro every 6 years is not much.

In any case, it's absurd to save a few Euro on some batteries, which are
critical things (poor quality ones tend to run out of power in the worst
possible moments). Better to spend a few more Euro and have reliable
batteries.

Another thing, a guy who works for Intel (he analyses defects in CPUs)
told me that processors degrade over time, i.e. they age (at least those
used in consumer products).
Apparently over time CPU develop defects, which make them slower or
might even cause them to stop working completely. If so, it's not a good
idea buying a 6 years old computer.

a new mac mini is $499, or about 400 euro.

if they are actually identical, then it's absurd to pay extra for the
label on the outside.

Not non sense. The heat of daily use degrades any material like the
transistors in solid state amplifiers. The computer chips are miniatyrs
of traditional circuits and should degrade faste than, let's say my now
de****ed Luxman amp!

computers and other electronics last *far* longer than 6 years without
any issue.

electrolytic caps, particularly those from the early '00s, can fail,
but that's an entirely different problem (they were defective) and one
that's easily fixed.

That sounds unlikely to me. Do you have any evidence beyond that anecdote?
