scanners for film
 

Firstly, thank you to everyone who responded to my last question about
the Epson 3200.

We have decided to buy a new scanner. We have 3 quotations and I would
like to hear from this group which is most recommended by users.

We are a film archive and in addition to stills and documents we often
scan 16 mm and 35 mm film (both positive and negative) for clients for
use in publications, for our own publications (newsletters, press
releases, brochures) and for researchers who often need good, high
resolution scans.

These are the 3 scanners we are considering: Epson 4490 photo, Epson
V700 photo and HP Scanjet 7650. Does anyone have experience with any
of these scanners and what is recommended.

I wouldn't hesitate to go for the V700, versitile, does a very good
scan even on 35mm film. Probably a step back from the Nikon LS5000 but
with the scanners you are considering I'd give it a top rating. I have
had one for 2 years, recieved one of the first ones out. Has done
everything I have asked of it. Has enough dynamic range to handle B&W
negs, I get very good grain structure when I scan b&w negs. The only
bad part of the scanner is the film holders, cheap plastic, but I
haven't broken the 35mm slide holder yet and that seems to be the
weekest. Takes a little fiddling to get the focus just right with the
holders, but the other scanners you are looking at I don'r believe
have any adjustment. If you have odd sized negatives that won't fit in
the 35mm, 120/220, or 4x5 holders you may want to look at the V750 as
it has optical glass on the scanning bed, I believe it reduces Newton
Rings.
The Pro section of the Epson software is fairly robust and you can do
quality scans with it, the Home and Auto sections are next to
worthless. I also find it easier and more accurate to select
individual images manually, then you can make curve adjustments to
individual images too. With a drum scanner as a 10 I'd give this
scanner a 7-7.5.
I work in the medical field with this scanner.

I've used the Epson 4490 to scan slides and negatives - up to medium
format. It is an excellent machine - highly recommended; it even works
with Linux. I got mine refurb from the Epson online store.
