Are there any alternatives to neatimage that is just as good but
cheaper/free? Or, does the latest photoshop have this feature (I plan to buy it some day)? |

Photoshop CS2 (shipping in May) has a new feature to reduce noise (or grain) A current alternative to NeatImage is Noise Ninja. Are there any alternatives to neatimage that is just as good but cheaper/free? Isn't Neat Image free ? It's called demo version, but it is stated on their site that you can use it for free as long as you want for non-commercial purposes "The Demo edition of Neat Image is distributed as freeware for non-commercial use". The only thing you miss is the batch processing. -- Marie-Aude http://www.trassagere.com http://www.oasisdemezgarne.com |

Isn't Neat Image free ? It's called demo version, but it is stated on
their site that you can use it for free as long as you want for non-commercial purposes When I bought NI a couple of years ago there were four or five versions, I *think* the free one only worked on jpegs, not on tiffs, so it's not much use for many of us. IIRC there was a cheap version for 8 bit tiffs, a more expensive version for 16 bit/channel files, and another more expensive version that was a Photoshop plug-in (instead of standalone). Something like that ... Bill |

They say you can mork directly on TIFF images as well on JPEG, that should be available in the free version. -- Marie-Aude http://www.trassagere.com http://www.oasisdemezgarne.com |

"Are there any alternatives to neatimage that is just as good but
cheaper/free?" Digital Toolbox Deluxe is very good and free but it is PhotoShop action set thus you cannot use it as a standalone application. http://www.2morrow.dk/75ppi/coolpix/actions/ More information and (comparisons) about noise reduction applications: http://www.michaelalmond.com/Articles/noise.htm Markku Virtanen |

At leat now it's working on TIFF http://www.neatimage.com/featu=ADremap.html In the table for Demo (free) mode for 8 bit tiffs it says "+/- **" ... look below in the fine print and it says "** +/- means input is supported and output is not" ... which means you can LOAD an 8 bit tiff and run the program to see what it will look like but you cannot write out in tiff format, which means it's useless on tiffs for practical purposes (except as a visual demo). At least that's how I interpret it, and though it's been 2-3 years since I used the Demo I think that's how it works. Bill |

Are there any alternatives to neatimage that is just as good but cheaper/free? Paint Shop Pro 9 already has a noise reduction tool that works as well as or better than Neat Image. As PSP9 includes perspective correction and chromatic aberration (purple-fringing) reduction, it's very good value for money. David |

I originally downloaded the free plugin for Photoshop which also works with Corel Photopaint and thought so much of it I bought the full version. I could have saved my money. The difference of having control over your settings only slows down the process and doesn't make a great deal of difference. If you use Photoshop or Photopaint, download the freebe. It's about as good as it gets. Douglas |

The plugin allows one to use the selection tools in you editor and apply the noise reduction only to those areas. Exactly. I also have no problem supporting a company that writes good software. Linux is free but I send mandrake (now mandriva) a check once a year to keep them going.. -- Stacey |

There is no free plugin. There is however a free demo stand alone app on the Neat Image web site. That's what I thought, they've never had a free plugin AFAIK and this kind of app works much better as a plugin than as a stand alone so it can be selectively applied using layers.. -- Stacey |
