"Snapdragon 888 will... transform smartphones into professional cameras," said Qualcomm in a press release today

What do you think about that marketing claim?

According to the BBC today, Qualcomm actually said that, where I quote:
"Snapdragon 888 will... transform smartphones into professional cameras,"
said Qualcomm in a press release."

I find it hard to believe, if for no other reason than the lack of a decent
lens in the form factor of a smartphone, but what do you think of the claim?

... The firm suggested this would help software developers make
improvements to... live-motion tracking of objects,
aiding autofocus in video and photography..."

improvements are coming have yet to be announced."

In summary, dunno how much of this press crap is mere hype & what really
matters for photography (given the lack of space for decent lenses); but
they are hyping this up as being a step up for photography in order to:
"transform smartphones into professional cameras"

What do you think about that marketing claim?

5nm SnapDragon 888 with integrated 5G (mmWave, sub-6) on Samsung Silicon.

Arlen Holder December 2nd 20 03:32 AM

"Snapdragon 888 will... transform smartphones into professional cameras," said Qualcomm in a press release today

Update:

Here's the press release, where it's interesting they (truthfully) don't
claim it's "Qualcomm Silicon", given that it's clearly "Samsung Silicon":
o Qualcomm Redefines Premium at Snapdragon Tech Summit Digital 2020 (Press Release)
https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2020/12/01/qualcomm-redefines-premium-snapdragon-tech-summit-digital-2020

I'm not sure how much is hype & how much matters, but they said it has:
o "mmWave and sub-6 across all major bands worldwide"
o "support for 5G carrier aggregation"
o "global multi-SIM"
o "stand alone, non-stand alone, and Dynamic Spectrum"
o "26 tera operations per second (TOPS)" AI
o "lower-power always-on AI processing"
o Updateable GPU Drivers"
o "Desktop Forward Rendering"
o "frame rates achieving up to 144 frames per second (fps)"
o "photos and videos at 2.7 gigapixels per second or roughly 120 photos at 12MP resolution"

As always, take any press release for what it is (MARKETING shills)...
o Anyone care to share which, if any, of those are critically important?

Qualcomm isn't calling it Qualcomm Silicon as it's clearly Samsung Silicon.
