You can now get stand-alone back-up drives (3T) for under $100.00. But

the latest two I got I noticed they don't even have any ventilation holes
in the plastic case holding the drive. I wonder if the heat build-up
with shorten their lives?

It's plastic WDYE!!!

I got a hitachi (I'm not sure) 500 GB 2.5" laptop drive for 43 euros and
another 7 euros for a *metal* case (I think alumunium) with usb cable
and even a screwdriver! You just need to install the HD inside the case
and tighten the screws. It needs 2 usb2 outlets because one supplies only
0.5 A at 5 V and the HD needs 750 mA IIRC.You could get a stand alone
case and the HD separately and fix it yourself. If it's USB3 I think it
doesn't need an external PSU. I suppose it's a 3.5 HDD you could even
get a SSD for not much more money (not 3TB anyway maybe 500 GB).
