Canon S3 or S5....?
 

Hi,

I am having canon A310 and learning photography using it, and now
planing to get other new one. I have seen Canon PowerShot S3 IS and
S5, now confuse between these two. Or if you already know any other
good model which helps more in learning, please let me know. I'd sure
appreciate a suggestion.

rec.photo.digital.zlr - deals with SLR-like cameras with full manual
control, like the Canon S3 and S5 IS.

That would be excellent advice, David, except that rec.photo.digital.zlr
these days seems to contain little traffic apart from spam, massively
cross-posted stuff and still more floods of posts from that lunatic who
thinks he's being persecuted by MI5 and everyone needs to know about it.

I have the Canon S2 IS which is very similar to the S3, and have found it a
very good camera for its type, given the limitations of the type. The main
shortcoming in my opinion is the electronic viewfinder, which is quite
coarse -- but this tends to be the case with this type of camera. I'm not at
all familiar with the S5.

Another camera that would be very suitable for learning about photography is
Nikon's Coolpix P5000, which I don't own yet but probably will before long.
However, the P5000 is not a superzoom like the S3, and does not have the
articulated LCD monitor either. If the superzoom feature is important to
you, I'd suggest you look at Panasonic's Lumix FZ models which are
excellent. I have an older Panasonic FZ15 which I like better than the
Canons, though this is just a matter of personal preference. Panasonic's new
FZ8 is a very attractive superzoom at the price, but does not have the
articulated LCD of the Canon S2 and S3, which may or may not be important to
you. Any of the models mentioned would be suitable for your stated purpose
of learning about photography, and of course many other models would as
well. Everyone has their own preferences.

Because there isn't very much activity here on
rec.photo.digital.point+shoot, I have taken the liberty of cross-posting
this to rec.photo.digital where you will probably find many more useful
opinions.

The S3 and S5 offer very few improvements over the Canon S2. If the prices
are similar, then the newer models do offer a few more features (e.g., the
hot shoe on the S5). If there is a big difference in price, the S2 will give
virtually identical printed photo quality (vs. the S3 and S5) in most
situations.

I am very pleased with my FZ7. It's got a much better lens and zoom than
most point-and-shoot cameras and is smaller, lighter and cheaper than an
SLR. It was highly favoured in the zlr newsgroup when the group was working
well. I also have a personal preference for the Lumix controls - I also have
a nice small Canon but wonder if I shouldn't have got another Lumix as they
are perhaps even smaller. That said, I am now wondering about an SLR...

The Kodak EVFs have an electronic viewfinder with about twice the
resolution - over 200k pixels - makes a BIG difference. Recently, there
are some other manufacturers making EVF cameras with higher res
viewfinders.

One thing you should know about these cameras is that you can fit an adapter
onto which you can put a wide range of filters and extenders (e.g. circular
polarizer, UV filter, wide-angle extender, teleconverter, close-up lens).
They resemble a fixed-lens DSLR in many ways. There's also a firmware hack
you can load which gives you the ability to shoot RAW amongst many other

The rec.photo.digital.zlr group is still working well, and is the correct
place for this conversation. The charter of this newsgroup actually
excludes the ZLR cameras you are now discussing. Having said that, I
think that there is some justification for merging the groups having seen
how point+shoot cameras have advanced, and how manufacturers now prefer to
push DSLRs (greater profit on the accessories?) and have avoided producing
advanced ZLRs which might eat into those profits.

I have been using the earlier Panasonic FZ5 and been very pleased with the
results. I also carry a Nikon 8400 for wide-angle shots. Were I to get
another compact camera now, most likely it would be the Panasonic Lumix
TZ3

I've recently seen a large number of images from this camera, and I like
the fit in the pocket size.

If you have need to use some of the large number of lenses available for a
DSLR, if you need low-light shooting at high ISO, of if you are
photographing randomly rapidly moving objects (no, not UFOs) such as
children or animals, a DSLR would be a good choice. I recently compared
the weight of the two small-sensor cameras in my bag (1.59kg) with a Nikon
D40 DSLR with kit lens and 55 - 200mm IS zoom (1.67kg).
